The Integral Regeneration of the Pasaia Bay is the motor objective of this process, which has the activation of the new external port in 2020 as its final deadline.
The departure of the port activity to the new basin located in the northern slope of the Jaizkibel Mountain, in the Asabaratza area, will allow recovering 76 hectares for social and community uses inside the bay, which now houses docks and warehouses. A process like the one we are undertaking here is not new.
Not too far away, Bilbao offers a recent and well known example of regeneration of an old port environment, which has been unanimously praised inside and outside Euskadi. |
But Bilbao is not the only one offering a tangible picture of what can be done; something similar happens in Barcelona, for example.
In many places of Europe, projects to improve the port-city coexistence are being carried out.
There is a wide experience in that field, as the International Association of Cities and Ports www.aivp.org was created more than twenty years ago, and the Pasaia Port Authority is a member of the association.
The regeneration will be carried out by stages. Some of them will start soon, like, for example, the La Herrera-Norte area. |
