"The construction of the new external port of Pasaia will be carried out with an environmental hypersensitivity".

Those were the words of the president of the Pasaia Port Authority, Joxe Joan Gonzalez de Txabarri, last 25th February 2008, in the presentation, in front of the media, of the report prepared by the EKOS Estudios Medioambientales S.L. company. The report offers an initial diagnosis of the environmental situation of Pasaia, and of its regeneration, through the construction of the external port.

According to the report presented by Ekos, looking at 2020, the transfer of the activity port to the external basin, together with the regeneration of the Bay, will produce a series of positive impacts:

• - Decrease of the sources of polluting particles, inside the bay
• - Restriction in the emission of greenhouse effect gases
• - Minimisation of the risks on people's health, improving the quality of the urban habitat and the socioeconomic systems
• - Decrease of the sources of noise
• - Decrease of the traffic in Herrera, Altza, Buenavista, Pasaia, Lezo and Errenteria
• - Increase of the economic activity of the port: impact on Gipuzkoa's and, specifically, on Pasaialdea's economy
• - Regeneration of the Pasaia bay (release of the land, social and community uses.)
• - Improvement of the quality of the water and the ground in the bay.
• - Better mobility
